Hair loss treatment in Edison, NJ

Thinning hair is common in both men and women, and it often has a medical cause that can be found and treated. Anil Singh, MD starts by finding out why your hair is thinning, then offers proven treatment.

Common causes of hair loss

  • Pattern hair loss: the most common type, in men and women, often running in families
  • Thyroid problems: both an underactive and an overactive thyroid
  • Low iron, vitamin D or vitamin B12
  • Stress, illness or surgery: heavy shedding a few months after a fever, major stress, surgery or childbirth
  • Hormone changes: such as menopause or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Some medicines and crash diets

How we help

  • Finding the cause: a medical history and a look at your scalp and hair pattern.
  • Blood tests: for thyroid function, iron, vitamin D, B12 and other causes, when needed.
  • Treating the cause: correcting a thyroid problem or a deficiency can let hair grow back.
  • Minoxidil: helps hair regrow and slows thinning in men and women. It comes as a topical solution or foam, or as a low-dose tablet for some patients.
  • Finasteride: a prescription tablet that slows or stops male pattern hair loss in many men.
  • Custom prescriptions: when appropriate, some treatments can be prescribed as custom-made preparations from a licensed pharmacy.
  • Referral when needed: to a dermatologist for patchy or sudden hair loss, scalp conditions, or anything that doesn't respond to treatment.

What to expect

Hair grows slowly. It usually takes 3 to 6 months to see results from treatment, and some people notice extra shedding in the first few weeks, which is normal. Treatment needs to continue to keep the results.

Important safety information

  • Finasteride is for men. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take it, or handle crushed or broken tablets.
  • A small number of men taking finasteride notice sexual side effects. Tell us if you have any concerns.
  • Minoxidil tablets can cause fluid retention, a faster heartbeat or extra hair growth elsewhere, so Dr. Singh will check your health and blood pressure first.

Frequently asked questions

Can women be treated for hair loss?

Yes. Women often have thinning from hormones, thyroid problems, low iron or pattern hair loss. Minoxidil is a common treatment for women. Finasteride is generally used for men.

Does insurance cover hair loss treatment?

Insurance often covers the visit and blood tests to find a medical cause. Minoxidil and finasteride for hair loss are often not covered, but generic versions are usually affordable.

How long before I see results?

Usually 3 to 6 months. It's worth staying on treatment for at least that long before deciding whether it's working.

Do you offer PRP or hair transplants?

No. We focus on finding the medical cause and on prescription treatment, and we can refer you to a dermatologist for other options.
