Thyroid care in Edison, NJ

Your thyroid controls your energy, weight and mood. When it isn't working properly, you can feel tired, gain weight or feel anxious without knowing why. Anil Singh, MD will test, treat and monitor your thyroid.

Signs of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

  • Tiredness and low energy
  • Weight gain, feeling cold, constipation
  • Dry skin, thinning hair, low mood
  • Heavier or irregular periods

Signs of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)

  • Weight loss without trying
  • Fast or pounding heartbeat, shaky hands
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or too hot
  • Trouble sleeping

These symptoms are common and can have many causes. A simple blood test tells us whether your thyroid is involved.

How we help

  • Blood tests: a TSH test, and further thyroid tests when needed, to find out exactly what's going on.
  • Treatment: for an underactive thyroid, a daily thyroid hormone tablet, with the dose adjusted to suit you.
  • Regular monitoring: a repeat blood test 6 to 8 weeks after starting or changing your dose, then usually once a year once you're stable.
  • Checking for other causes: tiredness and weight changes can also come from anemia, vitamin D or B12 deficiency, diabetes or sleep apnea, and we check for these too.
  • Referral when needed: to a thyroid specialist (endocrinologist) for an overactive thyroid, thyroid lumps or other complex problems, and for an ultrasound when needed.

Taking thyroid medicine the right way

Take it at the same time every day, usually first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with water, at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Calcium, iron and some antacids can block it, so take those at a different time. If you're pregnant or planning a pregnancy, tell us right away, because your dose may need to change.
